Southern Writers Symposium Land of Dreams Student Writing Competition


Competition Guidelines:


Eligibility: The competition is open to any student registered at Methodist University during the 2015-16 school year.


Categories: This year, we are offering three categories. You may enter ONE work in each genre (poetry, creative nonfiction, and fiction). Poetry should not exceed two pages and while creative nonfiction and fiction entries must not exceed 2400 words in length. Students may submit to multiple genres.


Guidelines: Entries must be unpublished, but they may be entered simultaneously in other competitions. Manuscripts must be typed, double spaced (poetry may be single spaced). Each entry (a poem is an entry) must be uploaded onto submittable at https://southernwriters.submittable.com/submit/47521

All entries must include the name of the photograph in the Land of Dreams exhibit that inspired the writing.

 Your name must not appear anywhere on the document; however, the title of the work must be on each page as well as a page number. Your name may not be in the title listed on submittable or in the manuscript or the entry will be disqualified.


Manuscripts will not receive comments.


Entries that do not follow the guidelines will be disqualified.


Deadline: October 20, 2015


Recognition of Winners: In each genre, first place winners will receive publication in a student and a $50 Starbucks card.  An overall winner will receive publication in a student publication and  $50 Starbucks and $50 Barnes and Noble gift certificates.


Winners will be notified by email and will have an opportunity to read their work for the MUcommunity.
